The final three songs on this album are about Lisa, my closest friend, my hero, and my fiancé. Though I sat at the feet of top notch theological scholars during my time at Duke, it was my long distance engagement to Lisa that shed a broader light on the persistent nature of God's faithfulness.
I wrote this song for Lisa as I prepared to propose to her in the Spring of 2013. I wanted to write a song of love that encompassed a Christian vision of marriage. I drew inspiration from several sources, but mostly this Stanley Hauerwas quote:
"When couples come to ministers to talk about their marriage ceremonies, ministers think it’s interesting to ask if they love one another. What a stupid question! How would they know? A Christian marriage isn’t about whether you’re in love. Christian marriage is giving you the practice of fidelity over a lifetime in which you can look back upon the marriage and call it love. It is a hard discipline over many years."
lyrics
It's the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
Promises
Here at the edge of the canyon
I hold her hand
The Joshua Trees
They call out to me
To love her
Better than I can
It’s the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
Promises
Every year of my life now, wherever
Rich or poor, with you
The oceans won’t drown out
What’s woven in time now
Should the stars in the sky
Fail to shine still I'll call out
It’s the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
Promises
It’s the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
These promises
Love and Mystery
Oh these chains on both my feet
Swallowing the key
I am free
It's the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
Promises
It's the roots
Not the bloom
That make true
My promises
